Mother Teresa Council 12202 History
Mother Teresa Council 12202 was formed on May 1st 1998 under the direction of Past District Deputy Patrick Hagel at Our Lady of the Valley Parish. Charter Grand Knight was Bert Niehaus, Past Grand Knight of Council 4949 St. James Vernon, BC. The council was chartered by Supreme on April 15th, 1998.
Council 12202 has a very active membership Committee, having increased its roll to 100 members since the Council was activated in 1998.
Our Lady of the Valley Parish is a relatively new parish which was formed in 1995, and had a substantial mortgage upon construction. Through the efforts of the council and the parishioners by having dinners, raffles, yard sales, Bingos, Pie making sessions, Pancake breakfasts, and individual donations, the mortgage was paid off in 2006.
Members of Council 12202 participate in the church liturgy as Eucharistic Ministers, Music Ministry, Lecturers, Ushers, Lay Presiders, and Greeters. In addition, members were very active on the building committee phase and as members of Parish Council. On the 4th Sunday of the month, the council has a Corporate (jacket) Sunday, with all the Knights in attendance receiving the Eucharist as a body.
One of the largest projects the council took on for church activities was receiving the Canadian distribution rights in for the “Keep Christ in Christmas” Nativity magnet scene. This was and is and extremely successful program. In 2008, 35,000 magnets were distributed across Canada.
Another successful project was our “Loonies for Lumby” project. We collected funds from councils throughout BC and Yukon to help “rebuild” the rectory of Sacred Heart Parish in Lumby. Over $10,000 was collected and put to great use.
In the most recent years, the youth have been a strong focus of the council. Many funds are distributed to the youth groups, Altar Servers, and the School. This includes taking the Altar Servers to a hockey game, subsidizing the Youth Group’s ski trip, paying for students to attend wilderness camps, among other activities.
As our State Deputy Wil Wlmot says, the Knights of Columbus are not just a men’s club, we are a family oriented group. Council 12202 believes that 100%. Many of our activities are geared towards family involvement. We honour our ladies annually at a Ladies Appreciation Night. Every year we have an Easter Egg Hunt for the children, a Children’s festival, fraternity nights where the whole family is invited, and many other family oriented events.
Council 12202 has been involved in all facets of Community Development; assisting with Vernon Jubilee Hospital fundraising, the local Hospice, St. James School activities, involvement with Armistice Day parades, and Charity Appeal fundraising. In the past , the Council has had St. Patrick’s Day Dinners, Dance and Silent Auction as well as Oktoberfests.
