Grand Knight's Message

April 2014

As Catholic men, and as Knights of Columbus, we should all be big supporters of the Pro-Life movement. Coming to Vernon and the “Schubert Centre” 3505 30th Ave, on Wednesday, April 09 is the Vernon & Area Pro-Life Society Annual General Meeting. Doors open at 6:00 PM. Dinner is at 6:30 PM. followed by the AGM @ 7:00 PM. Guest speaker Stephanie Gray, who has given Pro-Life presentations across North America, U.K. and other countries. She is the author of “A Physician’s Guide to Discussing Abortion”. Tickets are available at St. James Parish Office and the Pro-Life gift shop as follows: Adults $20, Children under 16 years $10, and if attending the AGM only there is no charge.

We members of Council 12202 can be very proud to have a brother from our Council as Knight of the Month for BC & Yukon State.

I hope we get a wonderful response for our annual Ladies Appreciation night at the Schubert Centre to be held on Friday May 2nd. Tickets will be on sale this Sunday after Mass at our Lady of the Valley.

If you have some spare time from about 11:15 to 12:15 on Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays, the Schubert Centre can use drivers to deliver Meals on Wheels.

I would be most pleased if those members who rarely or never attend meetings (some can’t because of work or health) could make it to at least a couple of meetings a year.

Thank you and God Bless,

Karl Schoenberger, Grand Knight Council 12202

Chaplain's Message

April 2014

Dear Brother Knights,

It seems that we only recently entered the time of 40 days of the Lenten season and now we are already preparing to celebrate Pascha – Easter Sunday. I hope that everyone took advantage of this special time of spiritual enrichment and was engaged in some extra events, whether additional prayers, ascetical works, acts of mercy, etc. which bring about a growth in our faith. Let us pray that this remaining time of Lent may purify our hearts even more. May our Heavenly Father strengthen our faith, our prayer, which is faith in action, and fasting, an essential aid to prayer, so that if there is a need, we may be able to move the spiritual mountains of our life.

As I wish you and your families many spiritual graces from the Risen Lord, I invite you to ponder on the words of St. John Chrysostom, who captured the reality of Easter very well.

In His Easter homily he said to the faithful:

“If any be a devout lover of God, let him partake with gladness from this fair and radiant feast. If any be a faithful servant, let him enter rejoicing into the joy of his Lord. If any have wearied himself with fasting, let him now enjoy his reward… You who have fasted and you who have not fasted, rejoice today. The table is fully laden: let all enjoy it… let no one lament his poverty; for the universal Kingdom is revealed. Let none bewail his transgressions; for the light of forgiveness has risen from the tomb. Let none fear death; for the death of the Savior has set us free. He has destroyed death by undergoing death. He has despoiled hell by descending into hell… Christ is risen and the demons are fallen.”

Dear Brother Knights, have a blessed, healthy and joyful Easter Season!

Fr. Andrij

Q - How much do you appreciate your wife and everything she does every day all year long ?

Q - How often to let her know how much you care?

Q - When is the last time you have been able to take her out for an evening to let her know you really care?

Q - When is the last time you and your wife have been able to go out with your Fellow Knights and their wives?

Q - Lately have you been saying "I’m getting older and I think I’ll pass on this opportunity?"

A - The upcoming ladies appreciation night is a great time to say thanks and show your appreciation to your wife and also show your fellow Knights you are glad we came up with this event.

This year we have our very own Joe Bukowsky and his band playing all your favourite music along with your chance to show your dancing skills or quietly listen to well-done music by people you know.

Last year your K of C Council held over 30 planned events and your Grand Knight Karl believes this is one of the most important events we plan during the year. Prove him right by planning on buying your tickets early and attending this quality catered meal in the company of friends.

Tickets will be available from Knights at the back of the Church the next few weeks. If we haven’t seen your name on the tickets purchased list expect to receive a call from one our Knights on the planning team. We want to fill the hall and know you had a chance to be part of this Annual event. Remember no babysitter is necessary your children are invited and we have a Family rate we think is reasonable.

Something to Ponder

A Christian

Several years ago, a preacher from out-of-state accepted a call to a church in Houston, TX. Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, 'You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.' Then he thought, 'Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet.'
When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, and then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, 'Here, you gave me too much change ...'
The driver, with a smile, replied, 'Aren't you the new preacher in town?'

'Yes' he replied.
'Well, I have been thinking a lot lately about going somewhere to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I'll see you at church on Sunday.'
When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, 'Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter.'
Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read. This is a really scary example of how much people watch us as Christians, and will put us to the test! Always be on guard -- and remember -- You carry the name of Christ on your shoulders when you call yourself 'Christian.'
Watch your thoughts ; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
W atch your actions; they become habits..
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
